She was having trouble as well, having to support three boys, four of them. Swae Lee: Our mom, she wasn't really able to support us. So we had to start just flipping and throwing mattresses, all this crap. But we were dudes and that's, like, a girl's job. ![]() Swae Lee: The first time we were just at line, stuffing pillows. It doesn't seem like pillows would be that much work. We used to work at a pillow factory, making beds and stuff. Swae Lee: I was working at Olive Garden, McDonald's. What jobs did you have prior to moving to Atlanta? We gonna chase that dream." Excuse that cuss word. So, y'all just quit y'all jobs, you come out here and that's what we did. They were like, "Man, y'all are talented. Swae Lee: But we actually got to Mike through one of his co-workers, which was P-Nasty and Marz. So we came to Atlanta, and we just waited outside the club. We came back last year, and the year before that we were in Atlanta. Slim Jimmy: And so we came back this year. Swae Lee: Yeah, but remember? We had to go back to Mississippi. Slim Jimmy: Last year we were in Mississippi, and the year before that we were in Atlanta. Slim Jimmy: We came out of here to Atlanta, on like a dream trip. How did you guys end up meeting Mike Will's production team, EarDrummers? We ended up coming out here, and were behind us and were like, "How can we all just come together as one and make something together? So we came up with Rae Sremmurd. Swae Lee: See, we were going by another name in Tupelo, Miss. How did you come up with the name Rae Sremmurd, anyway? I understand it's "Ear Drummers" backwards. We had a lot of crazy party songs back then. What did your first-ever song sound like? With a star-studded remix, a music video and an EP, #Sremmlife, in the works, life for Rae Sremmurd is growing hectic. Outside of The Loft, Slim Jimmy confessed he hadn't eaten since then-so, for about eight hours. ![]() In between studio sessions, they took a break to chat with Myspace inside a self-serve frozen yogurt shop (Swae Lee chose a flavor called "Bananalicious," while Slim Jimmy chose "Strawberry Tartini"). Prior to Two-9's show, the duo recorded with Mike WiLL for a few hours. In direct result, Rae Sremmurd has been acting quickly to maintain its budding career momentum. Nicki Minaj and Pusha T have both lined up to record an official remix. After their other song, deranged party anthem "We," was featured in 2013 mixtape #MikeWiLLBeenTrill, the duo signed to Mike WiLL's Interscope imprint Eardrumma this year.Įarlier this week, "No Flex Zone!!" became Rae Sremmurd's first song to chart on Billboard. And, just as Kriss Kross had Jermaine Dupri and Rich Kidz had T.I., Rae Sremmurd boasts producer Mike WiLL Made It as a mentor. Just as in the studio version, Swae Lee sounds half his age as he warbles through the hook: "They kno-oh-ow better! They kno-oh-ow better!" Slim Jimmy growls like young Simba as he wards off people they'd rather not mess with: "Four, five, six, seven chains on? / Just stay in your lane, ho." Such grade-school taunting has inspired early comparisons to, funny enough, Atlanta's lineage of youth rap groups (No such group exists in Tupelo). Rae Sremmurd (prounounced Ray Shrimmer) has just two songs to its name, though it only needed to perform one, "No Flex Zone!!," to spark a small frenzy worthy of an established act. rap duo (brothers Swae Lee, 21, and Slim Jimmy, 22) had stormed Atlanta venue, The Loft, during a hometown, headlining set by Two-9, a raucous hip-hop collective it befriended since moving to Georgia in 2012. It's nearing midnight on a Tuesday, and two hours prior, the Tupelo, Miss.
